Course Overview:
This seminar will help keep you in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) maintenance, inspection, and repair regulations, and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) out-of-service criteria.
The Seminar will include:
- Review of Part 393, Parts and accessories necessary for safe operations
- Review of Part 396, Inspection, repair, and maintenance
- Driver inspection and DVIR requirements
- Qualification of maintenance personnel
- Review of CVSA out-of-service criteria
- CSA Basic Scores and the ISS
- FMCSA audit procedures related to maintenance
- Best practices designed to assist in compliance with the regulations

Thomas Bray

Tom joined J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. in 2005 as an editor in the Transportation Publishing Department, Editorial Resource Area. Tom specializes in motor carrier safety and operations management. He serves as editor of the monthly Transportation Safety Managment Today newsletter for both print and online publication. Tom also contributes to the development of forms, training programs and kits, software, and online services.
Before joining J.J. Keller & Associates, Tom had 23 years of industry experience. While employed in the industry, Tom held various safety-related positions, including driver, driver trainer, claims manager, safety supervisor, lead instructor, and Safety Director. As Safety Director, he was responsible for DOT compliance, policy development, driver human resources, driver training, CDL testing, and accident prevention for a fleet of 350 trucks and drivers.
Tom is involved in the National Private Truck Council, Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association, and Wisconsin Safety Management Council. He has completed all of the roadside inspector training courses offered by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and has been a voting committee member and program secretary for CVSA. He is also an instructor at MidState Technical College, a chief officer and advanced emergency medical technician for the Amherst, WI fire department, and previously served as a fire investigator on the Portage County Fire Investigation Task Force.
Mark Abrahamson
Senior Transportation Specialist | Acrisure
Mark has more than 33 years of experience in the transportation safety industry, all of which have been dedicated to truck and bus safety. Prior to joining Acrisure in 2017, Marks’ law enforcement career began in 1989 focusing on highway safety initiatives with the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Motor Carrier Enforcement Division. This involved conducting roadside safety inspections, HM inspections, career audits, education, and various law enforcement activities.
In 1995 while participating in the International Inspector Championships he was awarded the “Grand Champion Award”. In 1997, he was promoted to Sergeant supervising regional Motor Carrier enforcement operations and earned his Certified Public Manager designation. In 2014, Mark was promoted to supervision of the statewide Motor Carrier Enforcement and Investigation Unit.
During his service Mark also served as WI State Patrol’s Data Quality Review Administrator, served on FMCSA’s Technical Advisory Group, participated in CVSA committees, and instructed for FMCSA’s National Training Center. Mark is also past Chair of Wisconsin’s Safety Management Council.
