Overview
The Scopelitis Milwaukee Worker’s Compensation Team will discuss best practices for handling a work injury from start to finish, including:
- Strategies for preventing injuries/claims
- Maximizing early investigation of injuries
- Managing a work injury claim to achieve the best outcome
- Important considerations in reaching a settlement and outlining terms
Speakers
Mary Beth Hughes
Partner – Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary
She focuses her practice on worker’s compensation law, including litigating Wisconsin worker’s compensation cases and counseling employers on issues related to health and safety, accommodating disabilities, and other employment-related decisions following a work injury. Hughes works with employers to aggressively defend workers’ compensation claims and strategically manage both small and large cases to a positive conclusion. Her experience includes:
– Representing employers and insurance carriers on a large variety of cases
– Trying cases to administrative law judges
– Representing clients on appeal before the Labor and Industry Review Commision, Circuit Court, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court
– Counseling employers throughout the work injury process
– Performing a comprehensive analysis to design and execute creative strategies to prevent litigation and reduce costs
– Investigating injuries
– Advising on employment decisions
Her experience also includes representing entitles paying workers’ compensation benefits in third-party Circuit Court and District Court matters, including preparing pleadings, making court appearances, and participating in mediations.

Margaret M. Krei
Attorney – Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary
Margaret Krei focuses her practice on worker’s compensation defense, including analysis of compensability of claims, negotiation of settlements, and communication with claims representatives. She also offers Minimizing Avoiding Worker’s Compensation Risk training sessions for the insurance industry and self-insured employers who handle worker’s compensation claims.
Krei has experience representing clients in Administrative Law proceedings in Wisconsin. She has presented on topics including ethical dilemmas in worker’s compensation and best practices when dealing with worker’s compensation claims.
She regularly volunteers with the Milwaukee Eviction Defense Project assisting low-income tenants who are facing eviction.

Michael McFarlane
Attorney – Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary
He provides strategic defenses and advice for self-insured employers facing workers’ compensation claims. His experience includes significant appellate litigation before the Labor & Industry Review Commision, Circuit Court, and Court of Appeals. McFarlane counsels on high-value workers’ compensation cases involving complex facts and legal issues. His work includes:
– Investigations
– Preparing case analyses for clients – outlining current and potential workers’ compensation exposures and defenses
– Assisting the team in managing the direction of the litigation
– Drafting global settlement agreements to help clients proactively avoid potential claims not covered in the Workers’ Compensation Act
– Guiding clients through subrogation opportunities to recover benefits paid
He regularly works with administrative law judges at the Wisconsin Worker’s Compensation Division. As part of this, he works informally and at hearings and mediations to facilitate efficient cost-effective disposition of cases, predominately through negotiated compromise agreements.
